By 2035, combustion-powered cars will no longer be sold in the EU, as the automotive sector accounts for 20% of CO2 emissions in Europe (as it does in France). Yet this sector accounts for 15% of our GDP. Tesla is the leading manufacturer of electric cars, and Chinese carmakers are following suit. We need to rethink our reindustrialization.
At the same time, the place of the car in urban life is being questioned. Should we continue to focus on supermarkets and parking lots, or should we reorganize our cities around cycling as part of a new relationship with mobility?
Finally, the electric car requires critical metals to build, and significant additional (and "low-carbon") electricity production to power it. Do we have the means to achieve this?
To answer these questions, Echange & Réseaux is delighted to invite an expert from Bordeaux, Laurent Castaignède, (Centrale Paris 93). A lecturer and Bilan Carbone consultant, Laurent Castaignède is the author of several essays on transport, most recently "La ruée de la voiture électrique" (Ecosociété, in bookshops October 20, 2023).
He will show us how the electric vehicle has attempted to carve out a place for itself in the history of the automobile, between announcements of technical victories and just as many violent setbacks. He will describe the extent to which the promise of reduced carbon emissions can be realized by motorized mobility. And it will attempt to shed light on the future of this crucial sector.
